The Breast Reduction Procedure
The main goal of the breast reduction procedure is removing excess breast fat, or making breasts smaller. As a side benefit, reduction mammaplasty gives you tighter and firmer breasts than before since it involves tightening skin on the breasts. Smaller and tighter breasts resulting from the surgery can help you lead a happier and healthier life.
In the beginning of the procedure, you are given either IV sedation or general anesthesia so you’re comfortable during the procedure. An incision is then made around your areolas, and glandular tissue is removed. What is left in your breasts is then reshaped. If your breasts are extremely large, your nipples and areolas are also transplanted to a higher position on your breasts. The incisions are then closed up and results can be seen instantly.
After your procedure, although you can see instant results, you may be sore and bruised for a while due to the incisions and repositioning of your nipples and areolas. A surgical bra must be worn for the first few weeks. You’ll have to come back into our office one to two weeks after your procedure to have the stitches removed. Any difference in a sensation of your breasts and nipples are a common side effect. Expect swelling to occur even after a year. There may be some scarring. You are advised against doing any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for a few weeks, but you may return to work within two weeks, depending on your job.
